I have been associated with Acadiana Karate for over 14 years - first as a parent, then a student, and now as an instructor. Daily I get to the see benefits of the martial arts program at Acadiana Karate for all who participate but one student in particular stands out. As a teacher at a local elementary school during the day, I met a kindergarten student who never smiled, and cried not to go to school. He began karate in the first grade. His first day in the Little Ninja class was the first time in a year that I saw this boy smile - and he's been seen smiling and happy at school ever since. This student is currently the student of the month in his first grade class. His teacher states that he is self confident in his interactions with classmates and teachers. The school guidance counselor attributes his success to karate. " Karate has done wonders for him," she tells me every time she sees me.

This school has not only AMAZING owners, but a fantastic staff as well. They truly care for each and every one of their students! Acadiana karate not only teaches the art of self defense and works along your child's readiness to advance, but also teaches them self discipline that carries over to your child's home life, they are very emphatic about teaching respect for the art of karate so as to make sure your child doesn't become a "bully" simply because they gain knowledge of fight techniques and self defense. In addition to ALL that, they instill respect for their parents, their teachers, themselves, and others. I could go on and on, but to sum up, Acadiana Karate, Sensei Stacy and Shihan are the ABSOLUTE BEST!!!

Ashlyn(my daughter) started karate when she was 4 years old. She is 13 years old now and has worn every uniform, and participated in every club available. Sensei Kelly knows my daughter almost better than I do. It's more than the focus, respect, honesty, and constant reach for excellence. As an overprotective parent, I am really picky about keeping my tween busy and out of trouble. I am so thankful for everyone at Acadiana Karate for all that they do. Sensei Kelly is a great role model that continues to contribute to the woman that Ashlyn will become.

What is the Right Age for My Child to Study Martial Arts?

With all the benefits of Martial Arts, parents often wonder…What’s the best age to enroll their children into classes?

Believe it or not, young exposure is never a bad idea.  Four- and five-year old’s benefit greatly from martial arts classes.  They are not doing any too difficult or dangerous just yet.  At this age they are just learning the basics, along with disciple, respect and confidence. They are also learning skills like balance, hand-eye coordination and attention span.

If your child is not suited for team sports, it’s still a great way for them to get exercise and meet new friends.

Before all that, the best way to know if martial arts is right for your child is quite simple…ask them if they are interested.  If your child doesn’t quite know enough to answer that question, then taking them to Acadiana Karate to take a tour and view a class is what we recommend.  We offer a free trial class to see if you child enjoys it.

Kids love doing what their peers are doing so going with a buddy is often a fun way to get started.  We also require that all 4 and 5 year old be evaluated privately so we can tell you if your child is ready and which class would be the best fit for them.

All in all, kids can begin learning the very basics early on, but this can also depend on a child’s rate of development.  All of the classes at Acadiana Karate are age specific and experienced based.  We do not mix beginners with advanced students.
